Care & Consideration
I like to think like most creative things it takes so many parts to be perfect to get the perfect final product.
Take a simple meal, for example, comprised of basic ingredients, sourced from a shop and cooked by a variety of people. The meal will vary drastically between them.
The ingredients alone will vary the final product quite drastically, not to mention how it’s made. It’s unequivocally unique to the person cooking it. Care and consideration at every stage of the process and the best ingredients make the meal taste different, although it’s still the same meal. Ingredients play a huge part in this. Quality ingredients play a huge role in flavour, texture and nutritional value. Frozen ingredients from Iceland aren’t going to be the same as fresh organic produce from individual specialist suppliers.
Cooking the meal with love, attention, expertise and passion isn’t going to have the same outcome as throwing it in a microwave.
I source the very best ingredients that last a lifetime. I then design and build the cabinets in such a way that they function for a lifetime. It’s taken a lot of experience in building and fitting fitted furniture to get to this stage.
This is how I approach my alcove cabinets and fitted floating shelves. I've looked at, altered, tweaked and ultimately improved every element.
the base cabinets
For all of my base cabinets, the exterior doors and infills are built from moisture-resistant MDF (MR MDF), a far superior product to the cheaper regular MDF. MR MDF takes paint fantastically and doesn’t absorb moisture throughout its lifetime, which alleviates swelling and problems in years to come.
Typically I recommend oak veneer, because not only does it look fantastic, but it’s a finished product that’s hard-wearing and fits almost almost every home. The oak is finished by me with a satin natural hard wax oil.
The carcass of each cabinet is put together not only with screws but 12 hardwood dowels which provide immense strength and accurate corners. The fixed central shelf and fixed backs provide extra rigidity and perfect alignment. Each panel is cut with a CNC in my workshop, which eliminates time spent prepping material in clients’ houses. Prepping everything in my workshop not only reduces the inconvenience of me building at yours, but dust, parking permits, electricity, noise and the list goes on.
Fitting & Electrical sockets
Right from the ground up I take time to level the base cabinets with a top-of-the-range robust plinth system with an extra large footprint. Having a solid level base is essential to restrict movement for years to come. The fitting typically for 2 alcove cabinets and 6 shelves is 2 days, that’s 2 days that I’ll be at a clients house after already starting on my workshop. All waste is either generated in my workshop or is removed after I leave your home.
I try my utmost to relocate plug sockets and Internet outlets into the alcove cabinet, which eliminates large scruffy holes being cut in the back of cabinets and doggy carpentry to try to make sense of badly placed electrical sockets. The outcome is not only far neater, but the plugs are in the perfect place and no nasty holes in shelves and cabinets. I then use oak hardwood cable tidies to neatly cap off alcove cabinet tops, so wires can be fed in and out of the unit discreetly.
shaker doors & Hinges
The shaker-style cabinet doors are made by fitting together styles and rails (the frame) with a centre panel. This flat panel fits into grooves made on the edge rail, this edge rail is 95mm. If it’s a beaded door you are after the bead sits beneath the frame.
I use top-of-the-range Blum BLUMOTION soft-close hinges. Integrated soft close technology is effective and integral to delivering soft and effortless closing to cabinet doors. The Hinges have a 107° opening angle, which means they open fully, but stay away from walls when open. Along with the soft close functionality, door buffers are also used to not only protect doors but also provide a square equal finish when the doors are closed.
With years of experience in fitted furniture design and build, I work closely with you to provide precisely what you desire.
